25th of March, Greek National Day celebrations, Sydney Opera House Sydney, NSW, 1984 Photo by Effy Alexakis Two days of national significance to Greece are celebrated in both Greece and Australia (and indeed by Greek communities globally) - Greek National Day and Ohi Day (ohi means no). The former commemorates the formal proclamation of Greek War of Independence against Turkish rule on 25 March 1821, while the later recalls the uncompromising refusal of General Metaxas- Greece's dictator- to permit Italian occupation on 28 October, 1940.
